How do I even begin? This story is so special. The Sun Is Also a Star by Nicola Yoon forces you to empathize. It connects you with the world. It shows you something deep, and important. It sends a message. It talks about immigration, racism, family issues, expectations, dreaming and love. It’s teeming with beautiful quotes that I want painted on the walls of my room.
Nicola Yoon is a spectacular writer. The moment I started the book I was shocked. This story starts off so powerful. Within the first 5 chapters I’d cried multiple times. The overall writing style is brilliant. I love how you get multiple perspectives. It’s beautiful to see the loveliness and complexity of each character. It’s heartbreaking to see the struggles each character is facing. Nicola Yoon brought so many important, interesting and curious subjects up for debate. She dived into so many topics and executed each one incredibly.
I only know of one other book that shows you what’s consistent within each person, what’s different between us and what makes us human and that book is Legend by Marie Lu. The Sun Is Also a Star takes that to a whole new level. This book forces you to care for even the minor characters. It tells you not to judge too quickly because you don’t know the full story yet. It pushes you to be a little kinder, a little more compassionate, a little more understanding.
It talks about love, religion, science, history and racism. It depicts struggle and grief and pain in such real ways. I cried because of how upsetting it was. I cried because of how beautiful it was. I cried because of how honest it was. Nicola Yoon voiced so many of my thoughts, fears and dreads. She put such profound feelings into words. This isn’t just a YA fiction – it’s a work of art. It’s beauty and pain. And it tells you why pain is beautiful.
I don’t even know if i’m making any sense anymore. I can’t explain this book. It speaks for itself. All I can really say is that it’s a book that speaks to the soul. It’s a gateway and sanctuary for the heart. It speaks on such a different level and teaches things that are rarely taught. I really wish this book was a mandatory read in schools because of how incredible it is. I think everyone needs to read this. There’s no way you won’t relate to some part of this story. It’s like the story is written just for you. It’s like it’s written to you. And I loved it. I loved it I loved it I loved it. It may just be my favourite book of all time. Thank you Nicola Yoon for writing such a life changing story. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to forget.
Official Synopsis:
Natasha: I’m a girl who believes in science and facts. Not fate. Not destiny. Or dreams that will never come true. I’m definitely not the kind of girl who meets a cute boy on a crowded New York City street and falls in love with him. Not when my family is twelve hours away from being deported to Jamaica. Falling in love with him won’t be my story.
Daniel: I’ve always been the good son, the good student, living up to my parents’ high expectations. Never the poet. Or the dreamer. But when I see her, I forget about all that. Something about Natasha makes me think that fate has something much more extraordinary in store—for both of us.
The Universe: Every moment in our lives has brought us to this single moment. A million futures lie before us. Which one will come true?
